The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to go ahead with the second phase of fare revisions to come into effect from today, October 10, as recommended by the fourth Fare Fixation Committee (FFC).

The move comes after a two-week-long tussle between the DMRC and the Delhi government, which called the fare hike “anti-people”.

After the DMRC announced its decision to go ahead with the hike, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that despite opposition from 5 of its director’s the DMRC was still going ahead with the steep fare hike without considerations for the common man.

According to an unidentified source from the Union Urban Development Ministry quoted by The Indian Express, the DMRC Board had considered Kejriwal’s proposal to defer the Metro fare hike, however, the Board was informed that under Section 37 of the Metro Railways (Operation and Maintenance) Act, 2002, recommendations of the FFC were binding on Metro rail authorities.

Stating that it had no power to interfere with FFC recommendations, the DMRC board refused to interfere in the Metro fare hike matter, the source was quoted as saying.

The first phase of the hike was implemented in May this year.
