A major fire broke out at a pub’s terrace in Kamala Mills Compound in Mumbai’s Lower Parel on Thursday night, killing at least 14 people and injuring 21. The police said the tragedy took place on the third floor while a birthday party was being hosted and the flames spread in around 30 minutes.
As many as eight fire engines and five water tankers had to be rushed to the spot, BMC’s disaster management cell was reported to have said. Ambulances were sent to the spot and the victims taken to KEM hospital.
The pub was adjacent to the Times Network office in the compound, and the blaze quickly spread to the surrounding area and offices of the media house, due to which Times Network channels stopped transmission in the early hours of Friday.
MK Anand, MD and CEO of Times Network, said: “Our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost their near and dear ones last night. We have been extremely fortunate that no lives were lost from Times Network although the fire did affect our premises. We have been able to put our news channels back on air. We are trying to put the remaining channels on by noon.”
Times Now and Mirror Now were on air in a few hours and Times Now HD was also up by 8.30 am. A report said Movies Now, Movies Now HD, MNX HD, MN+ HD, MNX, Romedy Now, Romedy Now HD and Zoom are not transmitting due to major infrastructure losses.
TV9 Marathi office was also located on the same premises and was affected by the fire.
Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed grief over the incident and has ordered an in-depth inquiry. The cause of the fire is not yet known. Three restaurant owners have been booked in the case, which also found mention in Parliament.
