Former Union minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has been accused of ‘abetment to suicide’ in the Sunanda Pushkar death case. Pushkar, Tharoor’s wife, was found dead under mysterious in a luxury hotel room in New Delhi on January 17, 2014.
In a charge sheet filed on Monday, the Delhi Police has accused Tharoor under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) and Section 498A (cruelty in a marriage) of the Indian Penal Code, The Indian Express reported. Filed before Metropolitan Magistrate Dharmender Singh, the charge sheet is over 3000 pages.
Speaking on the matter, Member of Parliament to Rajya Sabha Subramanian Swamy said, “All witnesses & documents were destroyed by UPA govt & corrupt police. On basis of current evidence, this is what could be done.” Swamy added, “There are allegations on Shashi Tharoor that he forced his wife to commit suicide.”
Responding to the charge sheet filed by the Delhi police, Tharoor tweeted that he intends to fight the “preposterous charge sheet” vigorously. He also added, “No one who knew Sunanda believes she would ever have committed suicide, let alone abetment on my part. If this is conclusion arrived at after 4+ yrs of investigation, it does not speak well of the methods or motivations of the Delhi Police.”
The next hearing for the case is scheduled for May 24.
