On Monday, former Union minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was accused of “abetment to suicide” in the Sunanda Pushkar case. Pushkar, Tharoor’s wife, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a Delhi luxury hotel room on January 17, 2014.

The Delhi Police have filed a chargesheet against Tharoor under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) and Section 498A (cruelty in marriage) of the Indian Penal Code.

The news was covered by various national dailies on the front pages today.

The Times of India led with Smriti Irani’s removal from the I&B ministry and covered the Tharoor news – ‘Tharoor abetted Sunanda’s suicide, says chargesheet’ – as a side story on the front page. It gave more detailed coverage to the story on Page 4, putting up the timeline of events, report findings, evidence collected and Tharoor’s response.

Hindustan Times also put the news – ‘Sunanda case: police charge Tharoor with abetting suicide’ – as a side story on Page 1, reporting the clashes during the West Bengal panchayat polls as the main story.

The Hindu had the Cauvery dispute as its lead story, while ‘Tharoor abetted wife Sunanda’s suicide: SIT’ was assigned as side story. The Indian Express led with the story on the shifting of ministers in the Cabinet. ‘Delhi Police charge Tharoor with cruelty, abetting wife’s suicide,’ was assigned a small space on the front page.
