Following the death of three girls in east Delhi’s Mandawali, the Delhi Commission for Women has sought a report from the Delhi Police in the matter. On Tuesday, three girls aged eight, four and two years died in east Delhi due to starvation and malnutrition.

According to the police, there were no injury marks on their bodies. Three doctors from the GTB hospital had conducted a second post-mortem. “The second post-mortem was conducted as we wanted to make sure that the exact cause of death was ascertained, and there was no confusion in the matter,” a police official was quoted as saying. The bodies were subsequently handed over to the mother of the girls for their final rites, The Indian Express reported.

Speaking on the matter, news agency ANI quoted Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital’s Amita Saxena as saying that it was a case of “gross malnutrition”; there was no trace of fat on their bodies.

According to the police, the girls had reportedly starved for over three days. Earlier, the family was forced to vacate their house and move to a friend’s house in Mandawali.

Reports state that the Delhi government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.
