Fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi was arrested in London today. The arrest comes three days after the UK issued a warrant against him, following the Enforcement Directorate’s request for his extradition, NDTV reports. In a statement, the Metropolitan Police said: “Nirav Deepak Modi, 48 (Date of Birth 24.02.71), was arrested on behalf of the Indian Authorities on Tuesday, 19 March, in Holborn. He will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 20 March.”

Modi fled from India after allegedly defrauding Punjab National Bank of ₹11,000 crore.

Live Mint reports: “Senior officials familiar with the development said that Modi is now going to be produced in a London court, before the commencement of his extradition hearing.”

Yesterday, a top court in the UK issued an arrest warrant against Modi after British home secretary Sajid Javid certified India’s request to extradite him. Modi’s presence in the UK was confirmed earlier this month when a reporter from The Telegraph attempted to interview him on Oxford Street in London.
